Report from Ola Smart, Director Kids Action Sierra Leone September 2011
|
 |
Alastair’s trip to Sierra Leone in 2011 was an extraordinary one. He visited all of the provinces to see the kids and parents. The journey was not easy with the bad roads. One area was only accessible by Honda motor cycles which we hired to ride on the rough single track road. Guest houses/ hotels outside the capital city were very substandard and we had to cope with noise, poor water and heat without air conditioners.
KIDS AND CARERS. All of the kids visited had one major report in common. They all missed the home. They were all attending schools and classes indicated in the original grant requests for sponsorship. Most are getting quite adjusted to their communities and have made new friends.
All the parents interviewed expressed gratitude and lots of thanks for all the supports they received for their kids’ education, feeding, clothing, medical, allowances.
Some parents had tears running down their eyes and could hardly express themselves as they saw Alastair in their homes. They said they could not understand how so much love and kindness could be given to them from donors in a country so far away.
MONITORING. All families are visited monthly with allowances. We keep a careful watch over them. Some need additional help.
